BETWEEN COLONIALISM AND MISSIONARY ACTIVITY:
TRAJECTORIES IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY
“We – believers in God, in the final encounter with Him and in His Judgment – starting from our religious and moral responsibility, and through this Document, ask ourselves and the leaders of the world, the architects of international politics and the global economy, to seriously commit themselves to spreading the culture of tolerance, coexistence, and peace; to intervene, as soon as possible, to stop the shedding of innocent blood, and to put an end to wars, conflicts, environmental degradation, and the moral and cultural decline currently affecting the world.”

The Parable of Tolerance: Nathan the Wise
Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729–1781) published the theatrical drama Nathan the Wise (Nathan der Weise), in which he takes up and reworks the famous parable of the three rings found in Boccaccio’s Decameron—the story of the father, three identical rings, and his three sons—in order to lay the foundation for religious tolerance.
In this extraordinary drama, addressing the powerful Saladin, the wise Nathan explains that “it is impossible to prove which ring is the true one, just as it is for us to prove which is the true faith,” and the judge, called upon to determine the authenticity of the ring, declares:
“Strive to imitate his [the father’s] incorruptible and unbiased love.
Let each one compete to demonstrate, in the light of day, the virtue of the stone in his ring. And let him aid his virtue with gentleness, with unyielding patience and charity, and with profound devotion to God.”

The Growth of Interest in the History of Religions in the Nineteenth Century
A strong interest in the study of religions develops from multiple perspectives: linguistic, anthropological, sociological, and historical. Chairs in the history of religions are established in various European cities. Important figures include Max Müller (1823–1900), Rudolf Otto (1869–1937), and Ernst Troeltsch (1865–1923).

The World Parliament of Religions in Chicago (1893)
In the context of the celebrations for the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America, from 11 to 27 September 1893 an extraordinary event of great significance took place: the World Parliament of Religions, with the participation of dozens of representatives from different religions.
For Islam, Mohammad Alexander Russell Webb (1846–1916) was present, while among Christians there were both Catholics and Protestants.
