DEVOTION AND MEDITATION IN ISLAM
A fundamental aspect of Islamic devotion is the invocation of the Most Beautiful Names of God (al-asmā’ al-ḥusnā), which express the divine attributes.
According to Islamic tradition, God has ninety-nine Names, and knowing and reciting them strengthens the bond between the believer and the Creator. Among them, al-Raḥmān (The Most Compassionate) and al-Raḥīm (The Most Merciful), both associated with mercy and love, hold a central place in prayer and in the basmala, the invocation that opens every act of prayer:
"In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful."
Meditation (Dhikr)
In Islamic spirituality, particularly in Sufism, the practice of dhikr (the remembrance of God) through the recitation of the Divine Names is a privileged path to spiritual elevation. Meditating on these Names invites believers not only to know God, but also to embody His attributes in their daily lives, thus drawing closer to spiritual perfection.

Un aspetto fondamentale della devozione islamica è l’invocazione dei Nomi più belli di Dio (al-asmā’ al-ḥusnā), che esprimono gli attributi divini.
Secondo la tradizione, Dio possiede novantanove Nomi, e la loro conoscenza e recitazione rafforzano il legame tra il credente e il Creatore. Tra questi, al-Raḥmān e al-Raḥīm, legati alla misericordia e all’amore, sono centrali nella preghiera e nella basmala, cioè l’invocazione con la quale inizia ogni preghiera: “Nel nome di Dio, il Clementissimo, il Misericordioso”.
La meditazione (dikr)
Nella spiritualità islamica, in particolare nel sufismo, la pratica del ḏikr (ricordo di Dio) attraverso la recitazione dei Nomi divini è una via privilegiata di elevazione spirituale. Meditare su tali Nomi invita il credente non solo a conoscere Dio, ma anche a imitare i Suoi attributi nella vita quotidiana, avvicinandosi così alla perfezione spirituale.
