THE TURNING POINT OF VATICAN II (1965): DIGNITATIS HUMANAE AND NOSTRA AETATE
The Church also regards with esteem Muslims who adore the one God, living and subsisting, merciful and almighty, creator of heaven and earth, who has spoken to humanity.

THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL (1962–1965): A TURNING POINT
The Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) marks a decisive turning point in the Catholic Church’s relationship with Islam.
Already Pope Paul VI, in the encyclical Ecclesiam Suam (1964), called for dialogue with all believers.
“The plan of salvation also embraces those who acknowledge the Creator, and among them in particular the Muslims, who, professing to hold the faith of Abraham, together with us adore the one God, merciful and who will judge humanity on the last day.”
— Lumen Gentium, no. 16
Religious Freedom: the Declaration Dignitatis Humanae
The foundation of religious experience and dialogue is religious freedom, affirmed by the declaration Dignitatis Humanae (DH).
“This Vatican Council declares that the human person has the right to religious freedom.
The content of such freedom is that all human beings are to be immune from coercion on the part of individuals, social groups, and any human power whatsoever, so that in religious matters no one is forced to act against his conscience nor prevented, within due limits, from acting in accordance with it, privately or publicly, individually or in association with others.
Furthermore, it declares that the right to religious freedom is based on the very dignity of the human person as known through revealed word of God and reason itself. This right to religious freedom must be recognized and guaranteed as a civil right within the legal order of society.”
— Dignitatis Humanae, no. 2
Relations between the Catholic Church and Other Religions: Nostra Aetate
The declaration Nostra Aetate (NA) clarifies the Catholic Church’s attitude toward other religions. It is guided by two principles: recognition of religious experience as a constitutive dimension of the human person, and the conviction that religions reflect a “ray of truth” (NA 2).
It is the shortest text of the entire Council, consisting of five paragraphs, of which no. 3 is entirely dedicated to Muslims.
“The Church also regards with esteem Muslims who adore the one God, living and subsisting, merciful and almighty, creator of heaven and earth, who has spoken to humanity.
They strive to submit wholeheartedly to the hidden decrees of God, as Abraham submitted himself to God, to whom the Islamic faith readily refers.
Although they do not acknowledge Jesus as God, they revere Him as a prophet; they also honor His virgin mother Mary and at times even invoke her with devotion.
Moreover, they await the day of judgment when God will render recompense to all those raised from the dead.
Thus they value moral life and worship God especially through prayer, almsgiving, and fasting.
If, over the centuries, many disagreements and hostilities have arisen between Christians and Muslims, this sacred Council urges all to forget the past and to strive sincerely for mutual understanding, as well as to defend and promote together for all people social justice, moral values, peace, and freedom.”
— Nostra Aetate, no. 3
