THE FIRST TEXT WRITTEN AND SIGNED JOINTLY
The Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, signed in Abu Dhabi on 4 February 2019 by Pope Francis together with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmad al-Tayyeb, represents the highest point of the journey initiated by Vatican II.
Method
- a text written and signed jointly;
- based on the shared faith in God the Creator and on the universal dignity of the human person.
Structure
- a Preface and the Document itself.
Content
- a shared diagnosis of the crises of the contemporary world;
- proposes concrete commitments in areas such as peace, religious freedom, citizenship, justice, rejection of violence, protection of places of worship, and the rights of women, children, and vulnerable people;
- the shift from dialogue as confrontation to dialogue as shared responsibility for the future of humanity.
First fruits
- the beginning of the construction in Abu Dhabi of the Abrahamic Family House, with the signing of the foundation stone by the leaders on 4 February 2019;
- the establishment of the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity to promote the objectives of the Document on Human Fraternity;
- the United Nations’ proclamation, on 21 December 2020, of the International Day of Human Fraternity, aimed at promoting cultural and religious tolerance, observed on 4 February.

The Shared Commitment
“In the name of God and of all this, Al-Azhar Al-Sharif – with Muslims of East and West – together with the Catholic Church – with Catholics of East and West – declare that they adopt the culture of dialogue as the path; common cooperation as conduct; mutual knowledge as method and criterion.
We – believers in God, in the final encounter with Him and in His Judgment – starting from our religious and moral responsibility, and through this Document, ask ourselves and the leaders of the world, the architects of international politics and the global economy, to seriously commit themselves to spreading the culture of tolerance, coexistence, and peace; to intervene, as soon as possible, to stop the shedding of innocent blood, and to put an end to wars, conflicts, environmental degradation, and the moral and cultural decline currently affecting the world.”

Il Documento sulla fratellanza umana per la pace mondiale e la convivenza comune, firmato ad Abu Dhabi il 4 febbraio 2019 da papa Francesco insieme al Grande Imam di al-Azhar Ahmad al-Tayyeb, rappresenta il punto più alto del cammino avviato dal Vaticano II.
Metodo

Contenuto
- una diagnosi condivisa delle crisi del mondo contemporaneo;
- propone impegni concreti in ambiti come la pace, la libertà religiosa, la cittadinanza, la giustizia, il rifiuto della violenza, la tutela dei luoghi di culto e dei diritti di donne, bambini e persone vulnerabili;
- il passaggio dal dialogo come confronto al dialogo come responsabilità condivisa per il futuro dell’umanità.
Primi frutti
- inizio della costruzione ad Abu Dhabi della Abrahamic Family House, con la firma sulla prima pietra dei leaders il 4 febbraio 2019;
- Costituzione nel 2019 dell’Alto Comitato della Fratellanza Umana (Higher Committee of Human Fraternity) per promuovere le istanze del Documento di Abu Dhabi;
- Istituzione da parte dell’ONU il 21 dicembre 2020 della Giornata Internazionale della Fraternità Umana, al fine di promuovere la tolleranza culturale e religiosa, fissata il 4 febbraio.
Il fondamento
«In nome di Dio che ha creato tutti gli esseri umani uguali nei diritti, nei doveri e nella dignità, e li ha chiamati a convivere come fratelli tra di loro, per popolare la terra e diffondere in essa i valori del bene, della carità e della pace» (Documento di Abu Dhabi).
Impegno condiviso
«In nome di Dio e di tutto questo, Al-Azhar al-Sharif – con i musulmani d’Oriente e d’Occidente –, insieme alla Chiesa Cattolica – con i cattolici d’Oriente e d’Occidente –, dichiarano di adottare la cultura del dialogo come via; la collaborazione comune come condotta; la conoscenza reciproca come metodo e criterio.
Noi – credenti in Dio, nell’incontro finale con Lui e nel Suo Giudizio –, partendo dalla nostra responsabilità religiosa e morale, e attraverso questo Documento, chiediamo a noi stessi e ai Leader del mondo, agli artefici della politica internazionale e dell’economia mondiale, di impegnarsi seriamente per diffondere la cultura della tolleranza, della convivenza e della pace; di intervenire, quanto prima possibile, per fermare lo spargimento di sangue innocente, e di porre fine alle guerre, ai conflitti, al degrado ambientale e al declino culturale e morale che il mondo attualmente vive» (Documento di Abu Dhabi).
